Sisyphus was a king of Corinth, known for his intelligence and craftiness. However, he was also extremely arrogant and deceitful towards the gods. One of his acts of deception was that he managed to trap Thanatos, the god of death, preventing anyone from dying on Earth. This caused chaos, as no one could die and descend into the Underworld.

When the gods discovered his actions, they decided to punish Sisyphus. Zeus, the king of the gods, ordered Hades (the god who rules the Underworld) to take Sisyphus down to the Underworld and assign him a cruel punishment.

The punishment Sisyphus had to endure was to roll a massive boulder up a mountain. However, every time he was near the top, the boulder would roll back down, and Sisyphus would have to start the task again from the bottom. This punishment was eternal, with no end in sight.

Sisyphus could never complete the task, and so he remained trapped in an endless cycle. Though it was a cruel punishment, the story of Sisyphus also carries a profound message about perseverance and mental strength.

Many philosophers, especially Albert Camus, used the image of Sisyphus as a symbol of the absurd struggle in life, but also as a reminder that even in the most hopeless of circumstances, humanity can find greatness in its actions.
